Hi..... I'm back
Hi everyone. I'm back.
I posted this game and completely published it almost 2 and a half years ago. It was at that time the biggest programming project of my life. After I posted it, I kind of disappeared, so I'll use this post to talk about what happened and where I will go from here on out:
This game was originally part of a STEAM project ( STEM + Art ). I was in 8th grade at the time and we had the whole year to work on and complete the project. Of course this was a tough project to complete, but I got there in the end, and was proud of what I made.
After I moved up to high school, I came back to STEAM, and it was still really fun! At that point however I ran into a dilemma:
I was struggling with improving my game development skills because I just couldn't settle for a game engine.
I was really hesitant on staying with a 2d game engine because I wanted to be able to expand my skills to 3D before I graduated, and hopefully become a part-time indie game developer. This pretty much became one of my two dreams. The other dream that I had and still have is to play basketball at a professional level, I've always had a passion for the sport and I always will.
Anyways, I was stuck between using Godot, Construct 3, Unity, Unreal, Gdevelop, Gamemaker, and just flat out selecting a library like Raylib and just typing up the game.
So for my freshman year STEAM project, I decided to go with Construct 3. After working on another game of mine (Lasers Everywhere), I came to realize that Construct 3 was just not for me, the learning curve wasn't steep but it was just weird. The layout was uncomfortable and the engine itself was easily matched by an open source GDevelop engine. So in the summer break, I decided to give up on Lasers Everywhere, and permanently stop development.
Here I am now..... Halfway through my sophomore year of high school, my current project will not be released to the general public, but I have gone back to Gdevelop.
So that's where I've been. Now let's talk about where I'm going:
I won't be able to release games as large-scale as before, given that work now starts to take more and more time and I just don't have the energy to put as much effort into game development as I used to. But I will be back
My plan is to fully learn the Godot open-source engine, make a couple prototype projects that I may or may-not release, and hopefully come back with enough experience to remake and remaster THIS game.
Everything would've been fine If Godot never got rid of visual scripting, but now that they did I kind of see it as a message from God to move on from typeless script. I've read online that Godot has a quite steep learning curve but it should be easy to understand, and GdScript shouldn't be hard to learn as it's kind of built like an optimized python.
But there is no way for me to tell how much time this is going to take, and when I will be back. If anything, I could release my next project anytime between this summer and winter 2026. Which is a whole lotta time.
So thanks everybody for the support that you gave me, especially since the release of this game.
Last note: If I forget my password before I come back, I'll come to the comments of this project and let you guys know with a new account.
